Epi/Lab Section Report
By: Kimberly Fraser and Sue Tharp, Co-Chairs
Happy New Year Epi/Lab section Members!
As we say good bye to 2008 and
welcome in 2009, we just wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your hard work and contributions to
the Epi/Lab section and FPHA as a whole.
The AEC Planning Committee is busy working on the 2009 Annual Conference to be held August
4 - 7, 2009 at the PGA Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. This meeting will be held jointly with the Southern
Health Association. FPHA gets to be the host state every 8th year and it will be great to meet with our
peers from seven other states. Be sure to mark your calendars and spread the word to your peers.
Epi/Lab section
is looking for a speaker for our section meeting at the conference in August. One suggestion in someone
from the main office to present on how DOH is closing the loop, so to speak on emerging disease diagnosed in various parts
of the state and assuring that all parts of the state are aware of what is happening in other locations in the state.
If you have any suggestions for speakers or additional ideas for topics please contact sue_tharp@doh.state.fl.us or kimberly_fraser@doh.state.fl.us. We appreciate any help.
The membership committee, membership diversity championed by the Epi/Lab section, as part of the FPHA Strategic Plan
hosted a conference call on 12/29/2008. The results of this conference call concluded that there will be
no increase in membership dues, and that part time students be included as a membership option. The committee
presented their recommendations to the FPHA board and was approved by the Board.
Additionally FPHA has received a $10,000 APHA grant, where
$5,000 is intended to use on expanding membership, developing recruiting brochures, and enhancing the website.
Think outside the box in recruitment of new members such as private sector, business, i.e. Disney or perhaps Faith-based
organizations. If any of you know an organization or have any ideas that can assist us in this matter please email me at kimberly_fraser@doh.state.fl.us.
As
previously mentioned in the last newsletter, The Epi/Lab section continues to work diligently on FPHA’s strategic plan
to diversifying membership. Anyone wanting to “volunteer” a potential new member, or who has
any questions, comments or suggestions can contact us via email at kimberly_fraser@doh.state.fl.us. and sue_tharp@doh.state.fl.us.
And finally,
please send your up-dated email addresses to Kim and Sue. Please include your home/personal email as well
as any work locations.
Take
Care and Best of Luck to each of you in the New Year.
